Secure them together using screws and joining plates crafted from scrap plywood where necessary. For stakes, cut 18-inch lengths from 2×3 dimensional lumber, sharpening one end to create a point that can be easily driven into the earth. As an alternative, pre-fabricated stakes are readily available at most home improvement stores. Plan for one stake per linear foot of foundation, plus an extra stake for each corner.

Place the stakes behind the plywood strips, every linear foot and reinforce the corners by adding the additional stakes where the corners meet. Once the stakes are in place, secure them to the plywood strips using screws. To determine the estimated quantity of concrete needed, multiply the width, length, and depth of the foundation in feet. Then, multiply that result by 1.

Next, install galvanized J-bolts at predetermined locations, spaced about 1–3/4 inches from the forms, ensuring they’re plumb and their threads extend at least 2-1/2 inches above the slab surface.

Once the concrete has cured to a point where a shoe print of 1/4 inch or less is achieved by stepping on it, further finishing can be applied using a hand-held float or trowel if desired. Allow the concrete to cure for a full 24 hours before removing forms and waiting at least another 24 hours before commencing construction.

While prevention is key in avoiding concrete slab failures, recognizing the warning signs is crucial when they do occur.

Water – either an absence or uneven distribution – is often the primary cause of slab failure. High clay content in soil further exacerbates susceptibility to expensive repairs and damage that can spread throughout the home, including roof leaks.
